www.ClearedJobs.Net. Are you a mature worker worrying about staying on the job longer? Many of us do that and, of course, the standard advice is, "Stay in your current job" "Stay with your current employer" and that 70 is the new 50 as a recent book talks about it, but for all of us that is not necessarily the right option. Maybe you have to look for a job, maybe you just need a change, maybe you're ready to retire from one job but you want to continue to work. What do you do then? Well first of all, take a good look at yourself; how strong are your technical skills, what kinds of things are you doing that are really current in technology? And if your skills aren't that strong now is the time to build them. Perhaps you've had the advantage of having had administrative help or a secretary to take care of a lot of your office requirements; not so common in a lot of jobs, so you might want to take care of getting some brush-up work on your Power Point slides, on your Excel spreadsheets, whatever those things are, or it may be the technical skills that are critical to your job. Whether those are in the technologies that you've worked in for a long time or they're the new technologies that are coming into your field, build your technical skills. That is in the area where there are going to be some assumptions that you don't have them unless you demonstrate that you do. Secondly, look at your network. At any age network is important but as we age and we're looking for work our ...

Blog: blog.jobfully.com Twitter: twitter.com Website: www.jobfully.com Experienced job seekers are sometimes frustrated to be told they are overqualified for a position. In part one of our series on this issue, we learned there are often hidden concerns behind the label "overqualified". Part two focused on how to address these concerns. Today, going beyond addressing concerns, to really turning your qualifications into selling points. The reasons why it would be wise to hire a highly qualified applicant seem obvious: Rapid ramp up Able to do job fully right away Ability to take on more than job requires You should certain bring this out in your materials and interviews. You may say things like "I am very confident I could jump right in and master this job quickly". That sounds very positive, without creating the impression the job would be TOO easy and leave you bored. In addition to the obvious merits, there are many subtle reasons why a highly qualified candidate is a good choice: Teacher and mentor to others Potential to create efficiencies and process improvements Expertise from past jobs to share Mature worker may bring increased stability New point of view in work group Variety in experience and background History of problem solving, getting through tough times Resiliency, experienced in dealing with challenges Self-started, motivated, used to working without close supervision Leadership skills and experience More connections and contacts Craft a number of success ...

Blog: blog.jobfully.com Twitter: twitter.com Website: www.jobfully.com It's not uncommon for experienced workers to be told they aren't getting a job because they are overqualified. Expressing a willingness to work below past level and beneath past salary oftentimes is not the best strategy for dealing with this situation. Instead, it's important to understand what specific concerns the hiring manager is raising. Deep experience should not be a liability but actually an asset in your job search. To bring it out, you need to address the underlying reasons directly. Here are some of the true reasons (ie employer's worries and assumptions) behind the "overqualified" statement: * The applicant will be bored in the job * The new hire will leave as soon as something better comes up * The overqualified worker will be resentful about the position or develop a bad attitude * Worried the individual will be unwilling to do menial tasks or will feel the work is beneath him or her * Uncomfortable managing someone older or more experienced * Insecure or competitive concerns about managing someone who may aspire to rise in the ranks * Applicant does not really want the job but is simply desperate for work * Skills are stale. * Mature applicant is not a modern, flexible thinker * Old style communication a mis-match for fast-paced short-hand used in many work places * Culture clash if 40+ worker is accustomed to a more formal workplace * Applicant may be difficult to work with, judgmental ...

www.ClearedJobs.Net. Figure out what you really want and let that job search strategy guide your job search and evaluation of job offers. Often you hear the phrase "what's in it for me?" An employer asks that all the time when they are looking at hiring. But you're also thinking what's in it for me when you think about what work you want to do, what job you can really do well, and how you can succeed in your job. So how do you figure out realistically "what's in it for me?" First start with that dreaded research. Too often we rush right in when we in fact need to stop and think a moment about what are my goals? What is it that I really need from that next job? And those needs range not only from the kind of things that we all think of -- a position that is useful to our career goals, maybe more money, maybe less of a commute -- but think about those things. What do you need and how does that relate to your longer term goals? Having thought about that you need to think about, and research, the organizations where you can succeed. Not all of us are successful in the same type of operations. Once I was looking for a job -- as were a number of my good friends -- and we discombobulated a poor hiring manager to no end when she was walking out of the job interview while I was waiting to in to it. The hiring manger was shocked that we knew each other and that we were clearly cheerful with each other. Well both of us knew what was successful for one of us was not going to be the ...

Website - jobfully.com Blog - http Most job seekers are familiar with the power of LinkedIn as a marketing and networking tool. But did you know you can use LinkedIn to contact people you don't know including those in industries or with job titles of interest to you? As a job seeker, I was excited to utilize LinkedIn as I got started, but was discouraged when I learned you had to be connected to an individual in order to send them a message. To do this, you pay $24.95 a month for the ability to send 3 messages. This works fine for many people, while it can be cost prohibitive to others. While transitioning to the field of social media, I found that LinkIn's group option is a good way to gain knowledge from other professionals in the field. Here I discovered what could be the most valuable aspect of joining LinkedIn Groups. While investigating potential contacts, I discovered I could make direct contact with anyone who was also a member of one of my groups. Here's how you use this to your advantage: Find an individual you are interested in contacting Go to their profile and view the groups they belong to. Join one of the groups they belong to (chances are you'll be interested in the topic anyway) You now have the option to e-mail them diriectly, at no cost. This is a powerful, free tool that you should be utilizing. Among other things, it's a great way to reach out to individuals in jobs of interest and request informational interviews. LinkedIn does limit you to ...
